Medical Tourism Boom Raises Concerns

Malaysia is becoming a popular destination for medical tourism, which has led to concerns about fake clinics and fake doctor certificates. The country’s healthcare sector, especially in Penang, Melaka, and Johor, is attracting many people from neighboring countries, particularly Indonesia. The high demand for medical services has resulted in issues such as fake clinics and counterfeit doctor certificates. However, the system in place is strong enough to detect such fraudulent activities.

The Immigration Department, which issues medical visas, has found instances of misuse involving fake medical certificates and unlicensed clinics. The department will continue to handle visa applications carefully to prevent abuse. Recently, a raid was conducted on clinics operated by foreign doctors at nine locations in the capital city, resulting in the arrest of 10 Bangladeshi men.

In a separate matter, the Football Association of Malaysia has applied for citizenship for four heritage players. A decision on this application will be made within a month. The review process will determine the category of the application, specifically whether the applicants have blood ties with Malaysian citizens. The four heritage players are intended to strengthen the national football team and are awaiting final government approval. Documentation is also being finalized for four additional players.
